Methodology & Data Sources

How we calculate estimates and where our data comes from.

Data Sources

Millage rates used on this site are sourced from the Alabama Department of Revenue and verified against county-level records published by individual Revenue Commissions across all 67 Alabama counties.

Our data is updated for the 2026 tax year and includes state, county, school district, and municipal millage components for every jurisdiction in the state.

Property Classification

All calculations on this site are based on Class III residential property, which applies to owner-occupied single-family homes in Alabama. Class III property is assessed at 10% of appraised (market) value, as established by Alabama law.

Other property classes (Class I utilities, Class II non-owner-occupied, Class IV commercial/industrial) use different assessment rates and are not covered by this calculator.

Calculation Method

Our property tax estimates follow the standard Alabama formula:

Annual Tax = (Assessed Value − Homestead Exemption) × (Total Millage ÷ 1,000)

Assessed Value = Appraised Value × 10% (Class III rate)

Homestead Exemption = $4,000 (state) + $2,000 (county) = $6,000 reduction in assessed value for owner-occupied primary residences

Total Millage = State mills (6.5) + County mills + School district mills + Municipal mills (if within city limits)

Important Notes

  • All results are estimates for informational purposes only and should not be considered official tax assessments.
  • Actual tax amounts may vary due to local adjustments, special assessments, reassessments, or changes in tax law.
  • Senior exemptions (H-3, H-4) and other special exemptions are not included in the default calculation.
  • Always consult your county tax assessor's office or a qualified tax professional for official figures.
